Age in Place: Designing a Multigenerational Home
31/10/2025
Creating interiors that evolve gracefully with every generation.
As families grow and change, so should our homes. Multigenerational living—where children, parents, and grandparents share one space—is becoming increasingly common. But creating harmony under one roof takes more than adding an extra bedroom or a wider hallway. It’s about designing a home that supports independence, togetherness, and well-being across every stage of life.
At Liquid Interiors, we approach age-in-place design as an opportunity to create homes that adapt beautifully over time. Spaces should be intuitive and inclusive, offering comfort and dignity whether you’re five or eighty-five. When we design for longevity, we build homes that not only last but continue to nurture the people who live in them.
Designing For Every Generation
A truly age-friendly home starts with universal design principles—but executed with elegance. Accessibility should never feel clinical. We integrate non-slip floors, step-free transitions, and wider circulation paths seamlessly into refined interiors that feel calm, natural, and effortlessly functional.

Flexibility is another cornerstone of multigenerational design. A room that begins as a guest suite might later become a grandparent’s bedroom or a teenager’s retreat. Layered lighting, and modular furniture allow a home to evolve alongside its occupants.
Equally important is the balance between connection and privacy. Open-plan kitchens and living areas invite shared moments, while smaller lounges or quiet reading corners give everyone space to unwind. The best multigenerational homes feel both connected and cocooned.

And because Liquid Interiors places wellness at the heart of design, we consider every sensory detail. ——Daylight and air quality, tactile materials, comfortable acoustics—these invisible layers of design support both mental and physical health. Sustainable choices such as low-VOC paints, natural fabrics, and efficient systems ensure the home remains both healthy and future-proof. At Liquid Interiors, we honor spaces where belief and beauty meet, because the mysterious power of expectancy can guide healing, and a room that brings the family together becomes a living vessel of rest and renewal. In this entrance area we designed an altar that can be concealed. This matches the family’s busy lifestyles and they can make their daily praying convenient and seamlessly integrated in their design.
How It Feels Day By Day
Entering the home should feel seamless and intuitive, that’s why we strive to create pleasant outdoor spaces connected to nature. In this project we designed an entrance that is welcoming to sit and relax. It encourages small chats by and long stays to be enjoyed by a shaded area filled with greenery and a gentle fan from above. Good lighting at multiple levels makes every arrival safe and pleasant.

In the kitchen, we design spaces that encourage everyone to participate. Counters at different heights allow both children and older adults to get involved, while ergonomic drawers and pull-outs make storage effortless. The dining area becomes the heart of family life—large enough for gatherings yet intimate enough for everyday meals.
The image below in particular the hanging cabinet that can be lowered was integrated for this project because the client is concerned about future mobility. Also, this type of design is not just food for people with limited mobility. It’s easier for everyone.

The living room should adapt as the family does. Modular sofas, flexible lighting, and durable, soft-textured finishes create a room that works equally well for play, relaxation, or quiet conversation. In bedrooms, we focus on comfort and adaptability: ample circulation, easy-to-reach controls, and window treatments that support both sleep and productivity.

Bathrooms are designed to be beautiful and practical. Curbless showers, slip-resistant tiles, and subtle grab points enhance safety without sacrificing style. We often reinforce walls during renovation so that accessibility features can be added later if needed—future-proofing without visual compromise.

Even the outdoor space plays a role in age-in-place living. Smooth transitions to patios, well-lit paths, and comfortable seating areas invite everyone outside, whether it’s for children playing or grandparents enjoying the garden.
Creating Connection Through Design
Beyond comfort and practicality, a multigenerational home should also celebrate togetherness. Designing for social connection is just as important as planning for accessibility or flexibility. We love creating living areas that invite conversation, kitchens that open effortlessly to outdoor barbecue terraces, and lounges that make entertaining feel natural. In our recent projects, we reimagined traditionally formal layouts into relaxed, welcoming spaces where grandparents, parents, and grandchildren can gather with ease. The living rooms were redesigned to feel more casual and inviting, with comfortable furniture that encourages family hangouts and everyday connection.
This outdoor area was designed to keep grandkids entertained, adding another layer of joy and liveliness to the home. By layering cozy seating, soft textures, and family-friendly corners, these homes now feel alive—places for laughter, shared meals, and lasting memories that bridge generations.

The Look, The Feel, The Heart
Material and color choices shape the home’s emotional energy. We love natural materials—wood, linen, stone—because they age gracefully and bring warmth. A neutral palette with contrasting tones helps older eyes navigate space while maintaining a serene, cohesive atmosphere.

Technology supports this harmony quietly in the background. Smart lighting, automated shading, and voice-controlled systems make daily life easier for everyone, from busy parents to those with limited mobility.
Ultimately, age-in-place design is about creating a home that feels timeless. It’s not about preparing for decline; it’s about celebrating longevity. When every generation feels equally considered, a home becomes more than shelter—it becomes a living, breathing reflection of family connection.
A Home That Grows With You
Imagine a home where grandparents can stay close, where kids can grow without outgrowing their rooms, and where design supports independence for everyone. On the ground floor, a comfortable suite offers accessibility without feeling separate. Upstairs, flexible bedrooms double as study spaces or future guest rooms. The kitchen and living areas stay open and social, flowing easily into a garden that welcomes all ages.
This is the essence of a multigenerational home: a place that evolves naturally, nurtures wellness, and keeps family close without compromising anyone’s sense of space.
